Special Needs Dentistry

Paediatric dentists have additional training and experience to treat children with a wide range of additional needs. These include medical, genetic and physical conditions, as well as sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Partnering with families as well as the medical and allied health teams supporting these children is all part of being a specialist paediatric dentist.

FAQs

1. My child struggles in medical settings. What can I do?

You are your child’s first and greatest advocate. At Kids’ Smile Lab we invite you to share your knowledge of your child’s needs and preferences with us before and throughout their treatment journey. We strive to ensure every child is comfortable and have a range of options such as weighted toys, soft lighting and fidget toys to assist them whilst also using behaviour guidance techniques.

2. What if my child cannot cooperate for a check-up, let alone treatment?

We have a range of techniques and, where appropriate, additional support options to help children who find dental visits challenging — the right approach depends on your child's individual needs, and we'll work through this together with you. You may be surprised how much we can achieve!  The option for comprehensive examination and treatment under general anaesthesia in hospital is available if required.
