Preventative Dental Care for Kids
Prevention is at the heart of everything we do at Kids’ Smile Lab.
Regular check-ups, professional cleans, fluoride treatments and fissure sealants help stop small problems before they ever become big ones - meaning less time in the dental chair and more healthy smiles. We take a gentle, age-appropriate approach to every visit, so your child grows up seeing the dentist as a normal, friendly part of life rather than something to fear. Alongside clinical care, we'll also give you practical, real-world advice on brushing, diet and habits.

FAQs
1. When should my child have their first dental visit?
Your child should have their first dental check-up around their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits help us catch issues early and get your child comfortable with the dental environment from the start.
2. Are baby teeth really that important?
Yes! Primary teeth, also known as baby teeth, allow children to eat well, speak and smile. They also hold space for the adult teeth. When a child has cavities, they may experience pain, disturbed sleep, difficulty eating, speaking and even embarrassment due to their appearance. In advanced cases, there is a real risk of severe, acute dental infections which can require emergency hospital care. Chronic infections can damage the developing adult teeth forming underneath.
3. Are dental fissure sealants worth it?
Absolutely – fissure sealants coat the deep grooves in back teeth where food and bacteria like to hide, significantly reducing the risk of decay in those hard-to-clean spots. They're quick, painless and can save a lot of trouble down the track.
4. My child snores and grinds their teeth at night. Will this damage their teeth?
Chronic snoring, tooth grinding (bruxism) and mouth breathing may be a sign of sleep disordered breathing. This can cause the mouth to be dry and can increase the chance of cavities forming. Poor sleep can also contribute to difficulty concentrating, behavioural issues and affect their growing jaws. Screening for signs of disordered breathing is part of our dental assessment. We work alongside medical practitioners, ENT surgeons and specialist orthodontists for effective and evidence-based management strategies.
5. What can I do at home to prevent cavities?
There are many factors that increase the chance of cavities forming. Thankfully there are things you can do at home to help keep your child’s smile healthy. We recommend twice-daily brushing with a fluoride-toothpaste and assistance from an adult. Flossing as soon as the teeth touch each other is important.
As parents we are bombarded with often conflicting dietary advice. At Kids’ Smile Lab we will also discuss guilt-free dietary recommendations specific to your child’s age and needs to help keep their teeth healthy - as the frequency of sugars, sticky foods, and acidic drinks can affect their risk of developing cavities.
