Dental Injuries

Bumps, knocks and falls are part of childhood, and dental injuries are one of the most common reasons for an urgent dental visit. We understand that this can be a distressing time for both you and your child. With years of experience managing many different traumatic injuries we aim to provide a calm and reassuring environment for everyone involved.

We prioritise dental trauma appointments and will guide you through exactly what to do — both in the moment and for follow-up care — to give your child's tooth the best chance of recovery.

FAQs

1. My child just knocked out a tooth – what should I do?

Don’t panic! If it's a baby tooth, don't try to re-insert it — keep your child calm and contact us straight away. If it's an adult tooth, try to gently reinsert it or store it in milk and get to a dentist immediately, as timing is critical.

2. Does a chipped tooth need to be treated right away?

Every chip or fracture is unique, varying by size, location, tooth type and the stage of tooth development. We recommend that the injury is assessed promptly, as there may be underlying damage that isn’t visible. With a good assessment and diagnosis of the injury that has occurred, treatment and follow up care can be tailored to your child to minimise the risk of complications.

3. My child’s tooth is going grey - does it need to be extracted?

Whilst not always pretty, colour change is a common complication of trauma to the baby teeth. The changes can be temporary or they may be persistent. Teeth can turn grey, yellow or even pink! The colour alone is not sufficient to determine if the tooth needs to be removed. Clinical examination and dental radiographs (x-rays) where indicated are required to accurately diagnose and treatment plan these teeth.
